September 25th-29th

I can't believe that September is coming to a close and fall is here!
we are excited to welcome fall this week. This week is apple week in honor of Johnny Appleseed. On Tuesday we will start our first science unit on properties. We are asking each child to bring in one apple by Wednesday. We will be describing and learning about the life cycle of an apple tree. We will be making homemade applesauce. If you have concerns about your child eating apples or the applesauce, then please let me know.

What we know:

Letters: We have been been learning the sounds and recognizing the letters, t, b, f, m, n, u, and i.  Help your child recognize letters and their sounds. Have them say the letter, the picture, and then the sound the letter makes. For example, t, top, /t/. This week we will add the letters o, c, and a.

Sight Words: the, see, can, a, and I. This week we are adding the sight word we. Please have your child practice the sight words. They can write the sight words on index cards to make flash cards. They can trace them in salt.

Specials Schedule:  Our class is divided in half each day. Half of the class goes with Mrs. Zarlengo's class and the other half goes with Mrs. Mink's class.

Group three will go with Mrs. Mink's class to:
9/25 Music
9/26 Art
9/27 Art
9/28 Art
9/29 PE

Group one will go with Miss Zarlengo's class to:
9/25 PE
9/26 Music
9/27 Music
9/28 Music
9/29 Art

Please look inside your child's backpack daily. They will be coming home with a paper book for practice. Help them by having them point under each word as they are reading to you. This helps them understand the voice to print. Have them point out the sight words that we have been learning so far.

Things to Remember:
We are starting are learning centers in reading and math. In reading, the students have been placed into their groups. Please check your child back pack each night. Students will be coming home with a large plastic baggie with a book. Please read the book with your child. We have been leaning how to hold a book and the direction of reading (left to right). They will point to each word with their pointer finger, while the other hand holds the book down. Pointing under each word will help them learn voice to print recognition.  I ask the students to read the book 5 times each night, then bring the book back the next day in the baggie.

Ipads: We are starting to do math activities on the ipads. They will be starting to do some writing and reading activities this week on their ipads.
